On entering the Database, you will be offered five options:
By selecting the Persons Index, you will be able to browse a list of all individuals for whom a Person Record exists in the
Database. You may choose to limit your search by initial letter of the surname, date, diocese or any combination of the three.
To limit the search to those whose surnames begin with a particular letter, select a letter from the range A–Z across the
top of the screen (Jump to Surname) corresponding to the first letter of the surnames that you wish to browse. To limit the
number of names displayed by selecting a particular date range, use the ‘Date range’ boxes to the left of the surname initials;
here you can also choose to restrict your search to individuals who have left records associated with a particular diocese
from the drop-down menu listing those dioceses whose records have been mounted in the database. Once you have made a selection
a list will be displayed on the left-hand side of the screen, giving the names of all individuals whose surname begins with
the selected letter and, if you have chosen to restrict the period or region covered by the search, with records created within
the date range specified, or in the diocese requested. Please note that once you have begun searching, returning the date
range indicators and region to the ‘——’ default option will remove the list of initial letters, which after the initial inquiry
indicates only those initial letters available within the combination of date and diocese specified.
Selecting a name will generate in the Person Window, a summary list of all entries in the Database relating to that individual under the heading ‘Evidence’. The full details
for any particular entry can then be viewed by clicking on the text icon in the ‘View’ column on the right-hand side of the
summary entry. The full details will then appear in a pop-up Record Window. It is possible to scroll up and down in the Person and Record Windows. The records in the ‘Evidence’ table may also be resorted using the tabs at the top of each column. At any point
either the ‘Evidence’ or ‘Comment’ elements of the Person Window can be hidden or revealed using the buttons next to the heading. Please note in the top right-hand of the Person Window the unique CCEd ID number which permits you to identify a specific individual among the many entries sharing the same name
or similar date ranges. At any point, you can select another name by using the alphabetical list on the left-hand side of
the screen and the ‘Jump to Surname’ navigation bar at the top. If you are aware of a specific Person Record you wish to consult and have the CCEd ID number, this can be entered in the box at the top right of the Person Window.

Selecting the Locations Index will take you to a screen where you can select any available diocese from the drop-down
menu at the top left of the screen. This will generate on the left hand side of the screen a list of all locations within
the geographical area of a diocese or under the jurisdiction of its bishop.
For convenience, in the initial view all you will see are the categories of locations found in the diocese and the number
of each type. To examine any of these subsections in detail, click on the ‘Open/Close’ box to the left of each heading. If
necessary, you can use the scroll bar to navigate extended lists.
The first category, ‘Parish (church)’, lists all parishes in alphabetical order, with parochial chapels and schools being listed under the relevant parish. There then follow diocesan offices, cathedral offices, domestic chaplains, proprietary chapels, extra-parochial chapels, schools, hospitals, gaols, and foreign churches. Select a location by clicking on it. A summary list of all records relating to that
location will then appear in the ‘Location Window’. This list can be re-sorted using the tabs at the top of each column. For parishes it will include summary entries relating
to all clergy who served the living, whether rectors, vicars or curates. For schools it will include summary entries relating to all masters, under-masters, or ushers who were employed. The full details for any particular entry can then be viewed by clicking on the ‘text’ icon on the right-hand
side of the summary entry in the ‘View’ column. The full details will appear in the pop-up Record Window. It is possible to scroll up and down in the Location and Record Windows. At any point, you can select another location by using the alphabetical list on the left-hand side of the Location Window screen. Please note in the top-right of the Location Window the unique CCEd Location ID which identifies the location and helps to distinguish it from similarly named locations in
the Database. This is important for citation purposes. Here you can also navigate directly to other locations for which you know the unique CCEd Location ID.

Selecting the Bishops Index generates the Bishops Window, from which you can access lists of all bishops associated with a particular diocese, and other ordinary jurisdictions operating in the diocese. After selecting a diocese from the drop-down menu at the top left of the screen, you will generate a list on the left hand side of the screen. In the
initial view you will see subheadings distinguishing bishops and a list of other forms of ecclesiastical ordinary jurisdiction operative in the diocese. To view the contents of either list click on the ‘open/close’ box next to the headings. You can scroll down these lists.
Select a bishop or another source of jurisdiction by clicking on it. A summary list of all records carried out under that authority will
then appear in the main Window. The list can be re-sorted using the tabs at the top of each of the columns. This facility
is particularly useful if, for example, you want to view all the ordinations carried out by a particular bishop.
The full details for any particular entry can then be viewed by clicking on the text icon on the right-hand side of the summary
entry in the ‘View’ column. The full details will appear in the pop-up Record Window. It is possible to scroll up and down in the main and Record Windows. At any point, you can select another ordinary by using the alphabetical list on the left-hand side of the screen.
