Written sources

PASE has been driven from the outset by a systematic examination of all of the available written sources bearing on Anglo-Saxon England. The sources range from the major works which generated many hundreds of references apiece (e.g. Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, and the various manuscripts of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle) to shorter texts, such as letters, which in some cases generated no more than the names of the author and the recipient.

A list of all of the sources which have contributed entries for the database can be seen by searching the database by ‘Sources’ from the Database Homepage .

An account of the method adopted for working through the sources is given under ‘Data gathering’, in the section ‘About the database’. An account of the treatment of charters will be found in the same place.

The PASE Team presumes that a few sources, though we hope not many, will have slipped through our net. Should anyone notice such an omission, please send us a message by using the Feedback form.
